Increasingly strict regulations are compelling the European automotive industry to decarbonise. To date, this pressure has proven effective: the average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars registered in the EU fell by 27% between 2019 and 2022. This was primarily driven by surging adoption of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), which represented 13.4% of the total new car fleet, according to European Commission data.
