Digital I.D. and authentication vital for automotive cyber security

The automotive industry is starting to grasp the challenge of protecting the autonomous vehicle, but even still a clear set of regulations is lacking. By Jack Hunsley

The modern automobile is changing and as we look towards widespread autonomy, cyber security needs to change with it. In the not too distant future, almost all our vehicles will be able to communicate with everything ranging from the cars around it to traffic lights, to fast food drive-throughs and so on. But this new level of connectivity is not without its worries.

In the past, when the car was solely operating as a lump of machinery, with any electronic components in the vehicle working solely within a closed network, it could easily be taken to a local garage for any electrical and electronic issues or updates. But as the car is becoming increasingly connected, this has quickly become a solution which is no longer viable, as G+D Mobile Security’s Head of Sales for Cyber Security, Ralf Schedel, explained to Automotive World.
