In the late 2010s, autonomous vehicle (AV) perception technology was considered the next big thing in the automotive industry. Spurred on by automaker confidence in apparently imminent Level 4 and 5 AV rollouts, trade shows were littered with dozens of sensor and perception experts touting their bespoke technology as the key to autonomous driving.
