Since the dawn of the automotive industry, brakes have been the most fundamental safety feature on any vehicle. The hydraulic braking technology used in vehicles today emerged in the 1920s, when the first systems appeared in passenger vehicles. Since then, most passenger car manufacturers have discarded drums in favour of disc brakes, which offer better reliability and improved performance.
