Elevated inventories, slowing economy spur warnings of ‘uneven’ truck freight environment

The latest US truck tonnage figures are consistent with a recession six to 12 months out, but it's more than just the economy at work here. By Megan Lampinen

July brought in another month of sequential decline for US truck tonnage, spurring warnings of an "uneven truck freight environment" for the months ahead. The latest figures from American Trucking Associations (ATA) show a 2.1% month-on-month decline in its seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index in July, the fourth decline in the past five months. It follows a revised 1.6% drop in June.
