Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port facility is actually in a place called Hooton. However, the story goes that, over the phone, “Vauxhall Hooton” sounded so similar to “Vauxhall Luton”, the OEM’s other major UK facility, that the decision was quickly made to change the name. Opened in 1969 on the site of a former RAF station, the plant has seen more than £1bn (US$1.5bn) in investment from GM over the last 22 years.
