Emerging market woes in 2015 increase pressure on ASEAN’s auto industry in 2016

After a 2 million unit drop in 2015, steady growth alone won’t be sufficient to create excitement in the ASEAN region’s automotive industry in 2016, writes Ana Nicholls, Managing Editor, EIU Industry Briefing

This time last year, ASEAN integration was being viewed with expectation across Asia and beyond. The plans for an ASEAN Economic Community, due to come into operation at the end of 2015, raised the prospect of a combined market of ten fastgrowing countries with a total population of over 600 million. For vehicle manufacturers, the fact that the group included bright hopes such as Indonesia made it an integral part of their global planning.
