As many Western cities struggle to maintain their ageing, often antiquated public transport networks, China is in the fortunate position of being able to build many systems from scratch. Ever growing numbers of people are moving to the country’s biggest metropolises. Some, like Beijing and Nanjing, were historic established cities in their own right. Others, such as Shenzhen, have developed more recently from small towns to megacity status.
