It’s easy to explain why automakers have championed lithium-ion batteries in the development of their electric vehicles (EVs): it is the best currently available technology that can be scaled, and pending nothing short of a scientific miracle, it is likely to remain that way, in the short term at least. But it is far from perfect. EV ranges, a product of battery energy density, are such that range anxiety is still an off-putting prospect for potential buyers. Development continues, but it could be that lithium-ion batteries are reaching the limit of their potential: that’s according to Dean Frankel, Strategic Business Development at Solid Power, a Colorado-based developer of solid state batteries.
