Diesel vehicles have been subject to extensive scrutiny as of late. The emissions scandal that emerged in September 2015 has led some to question whether diesels are up to the job. Even before the scandal broke, tests of various diesel vehicles found many were emitting excessive levels of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in real world conditions compared to when on drive cycles. This caused a flurry of announcements from mayoral offices across the world, suggesting that they would ban diesels from city centres.
