German OEMs prepare for combustion engine opposition

German OEMs are preparing for an electrified future, one made more likely following the Bundesrat’s non-binding vote to ban the ICE from 2030. By Michael Nash

A vote in the German Bundesrat to ban the sale of cars using internal combustion engines (ICE) in the country by 2030 sent a powerful message to the German automotive industry. Despite the vote being non-binding, the message was clear: new forms of propulsion are required, and the combustion engine will have a hard time from now on. A number of companies, not least of which, Volkswagen group, had already been making preparations for an electrified future, and the vote will no doubt increase pressure on the automotive industry to explore electrification.
