GM delays lithium mine investment until after US election

GM’s US$650m investment in the Thacker Pass lithium mine won’t be completed until the US’ future energy strategy becomes clearer. By Will Girling

Lithium Americas, a “pure-play” lithium mining company based in Canada, announced on 30 August 2024 that General Motors will delay its second tranche of investment until 20 December. The automaker agreed to inject US$650m of equity into the construction of Thacker Pass in January 2023, investing US$320m during Tranche 1 the following February. GM subsequently became Lithium Americas’ largest shareholder.
