GM targeting urban autonomous fleets in ‘next couple of years’

The acquisition of both Lyft and Cruise could prove fruitful sooner than many might have expected, writes Freddie Holmes

Autonomous driving’s arrival in the urban environment is looking increasingly likely, with pioneers of the technology showing faith in the opportunity. With so many conflicting views as to when autonomous vehicles could hit public roads, it is refreshing then to see a handful of concurrent opinions.

Speaking at Citi’s recent 2016 Car of the Future Symposium, Mike Abelson, Vice President of Strategy and Global Portfolio Planning at General Motors, remarked that cars will likely be driving themselves in city areas “within the next couple of years.”
