High-definition (HD) real-time mapping has become a prerequisite for autonomous drive capability. Designed more for machines than humans, this sort of map helps automated vehicles to better understand their surroundings. These maps need to provide precise positioning information so autonomous vehicles (AVs) can plan beyond what the sensors themselves can see. They also need to contain contextual awareness of the environment and reflect up-to-date details, such as construction zones or sudden traffic jams.
