High-precision GNSS completes the picture for autonomous vehicle positioning—almost

Agencies such as Galileo are aiming for GNSS accuracy of 1 metre or less, but some limitations underline the importance of diverse positioning tech. By Xavier Boucherat

It is largely accepted within the automotive industry that no single positioning technology will prove sufficient for autonomous vehicles (AV). All have their individual strengths and weaknesses, and all are prone to failure: cameras can be rendered useless by fog, whilst LiDAR’s lasers can be interfered with by rain and snow. HD maps can be helpful, but their creation is a long-term task. It will be many years before there’s relevant data for every road, and perhaps many more until that data is regularly and reliably updated.
