HMI pivotal to consumer reception of autonomy

Human-machine interface (HMI) design will prove pivotal in helping drivers, passengers and pedestrians to trust autonomous vehicles. Freddie Holmes discusses the ‘human experience’ with Lextant’s Chris Rockwell

Autonomous driving presents radical new challenges to domains that have seen little change since the ‘birth’ of the automobile. Drivers have always controlled their cars by pushing buttons, pulling levers, turning a wheel and operating controls, and pedestrians have been able to interact with drivers verbally or by simply making eye contact. Both experiences are set to undergo a major shift, according to ‘human experience’ consultancy Lextant.
