Honda isn’t moving back to Indiana; it never left

Although Honda plans to produce the new Civic in Indiana instead of Mexico, it will simply utilise an existing factory, not a new one. By Ian Henry

Honda is switching production of the new Civic hybrid from Mexico to Indiana—so ran numerous headlines in early March 2025. US President Donald Trump and some of his supporters in commentariat cited this as evidence of the success of his tariff policy. Some outlets reported Trump announcing a big new Honda factory would be built for this project. Jobs were returning to the US, contributing to the MAGA narrative. Except almost none of this is actually true.
