The true end goal of the future of mobility is one often described as the prevalence of electric, shared, Level 5 autonomous vehicles (AVs). As the theory goes, once electrification and automation have been given enough time to evolve, the need to own a personal vehicle will fade away and be replaced by affordable on-demand mobility capable of taking commuters wherever they need to go in the world. On paper, the idea sounds attractive, almost utopian. But, achieving such a goal obviously comes with significant obstacles.
