Hybridisation to address limits to gasoline engine downsizing

Continued refinement of the combustion process will bring further improvements to gasoline engine efficiency, but downsizing can only go so far before hybridisation is necessary. By Freddie Holmes

Downsizing and turbocharging a gasoline internal combustion engine (ICE) has facilitated major breakthroughs for OEMs looking to optimise efficiency without sacrificing driving performance. However, more needs to be done in order to comply with real-world driving emissions (RDE) standards, and engine downsizing can only go so far.
