India’s leapfrogging EV policy poses serious challenges for CVs

India is keen to clean up truck and bus emissions through electrification, but should hybrids be bypassed in favour of pure EVs? By Megan Lampinen

India is keen to electrify transport to tackle serious pollution concerns, and few segments offer such potential as trucks and buses. CVs accounted for about 28% of India's total vehicle fleet in 2015, millions of which consisted of high polluting diesel engines. "The electrification of these vehicles will go a long way in addressing this problem as well as meeting stricter emissions targets which are set to come into play by 2020," commented Fabrice Gatwabuyege, Automobiles Analyst, BMI Research.
