Bosch’s plant in Feuerbach, a district of Stuttgart, Germany, demonstrates that Industry 4.0 is evolving from a set of woolly concepts to a living, breathing reality that can bring manufacturers considerable benefit. Opened in 1909, the plant has lived through multiple industrial revolutions – mechanisation, electrification, and digitalisation, which allowed for machines and robots to be programmed. Industry 4.0 might be a difficult idea to pin down, but put simply, the next step will be to connect these robots to each other – or as one Bosch spokesperson puts it, to connect everything with everything.
