John Capp talks to Automotive World about the role autonomous cars will play in GM’s global safety strategy. By Xavier Boucherat

Announcements from various OEMs including Ford and Volvo suggest a change in the direction of autonomous car development. Whereas previous consensus suggested that self-driving cars would not arrive until after 2025, Ford is now aiming to have fully autonomous SAE level 4-capable vehicles on the road by 2021, as part of a ride-sharing service. Similarly, Volvo has joined forces in a US$300m deal with ride-hailing service Uber to develop driverless vehicles with trial in Pittsburgh, USA.
