DAF Trucks NV, along with various other players, has been openly testing platooning technology on public roads across Europe. The technology is yet to be cleared for series use, but on 5 April 2016, two platooning-enabled DAF trucks travelled from Belgium to Rotterdam in the Netherlands using the technology, which allows a convoy of trucks to travel semi-autonomously in close proximity. The OEM hopes this demonstration will make platooning technology widely adopted sooner rather than later.
Speaking to Automotive World at the OEM’s cab and axle assembly facility in Westerlo, Belgium, Ron Borsboom, Director, Product Management and Member of the Board of Management, DAF Trucks NV, discussed the benefits and challenges of deploying platooning technology.
