In the largest ever civil penalty imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has been ordered to pay up to US$105m in fines and penalties, submit to oversight and buy back defective vehicles due to what the safety organisation describes as the company’s lax attitude toward addressing safety issues in millions of its vehicles.
