Key trends in forced induction

‘Boosted’ propulsion is here to stay. Freddie Holmes gauges the industry’s view on forced induction not only in car and truck combustion engines, but also in alternative powertrains

While forced induction may have been little more than a performance enhancement for vehicle manufacturers in the past, it will soon prove to be a necessity – and not just for the conventional internal combustion engine (ICE). Fuel cell vehicles and hybrid-electric vehicles all need boosting, and suppliers are working furiously to ensure advances in efficiency and emissions do not run out of puff.

The basic architecture of the turbocharger and supercharger look likely to remain largely unchanged, but electric motors will be added to the mix to further improve emissions, economy and performance capabilities.
