Let the sunshine in: IAC and BASF partner on lightweight roofs

When lightweighting, suppliers have to work in line not only with industry trends, but consumer trends too. By Xavier Boucherat

Interiors supplier International Automotive Components (IAC) and chemicals giant BASF have unveiled their involvement in the development of the all-new Mercedes Benz E-Class. Together the suppliers have developed a natural fibre reinforcement frame that replaces the metal frames used to build sun and panoramic roofs in vehicles. IAC’s FibreFrame improves structural rigidity whilst providing a 50% weight saving compared with steel frames.
