The introduction of autonomous technology into the logistics industry is expected to introduce efficiency and open up a number of lucrative opportunities. In the US alone, research by American Trucking Associations (ATA) found that approximately 3.5 million truck drivers currently move around US$700bn of cargo annually. The implementation of automated systems into these vehicles will be a gradual process. There are many components of a truck which can be computerised, and each will be beneficial in a different way. Lower levels of vehicle autonomy (Level 0 – 2) will complement the driver through assuming some of their workload, improving safety and efficiency as a result.
