Mixed fortunes for different segments amid Brazilian downturn

Honda continues to stall production at its new Brazilian plant, whilst Mercedes-Benz is keen to get started. By Xavier Boucherat

Honda has further delayed a production start at its new plant in Itirapina, Brazil. Originally predicted to begin in the first half of 2016, the OEM now says it will wait for the Brazilian economy to start recovering before anything rolls off the line. The plant has a planned capacity of 120,000 units per annum (upa). This will eventually double Honda’s output in Brazil to 240,000upa, alongside its Sumare plant which produces the Civic, the Fit and the HR-V.
