The Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) is a platform for OEMs to create a buzz with the most elaborate displays. Competition between Germany's Big Three – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen – is evident as the three companies attempt to outdo each other with the largest or most inventive exhibition area.
One of the key themes of this year's event could be mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) – a concept in which consumers use apps or platforms to pay for transport on an individual basis for each journey, as opposed to purchasing a private vehicle.
