A new dimension: electrification and autonomy for complete lateral control

For its OmniSteer project, Schaeffler drew on the industry’s most important megatrends to see what new steering functionality it could bring in the face of increased urbanisation. By Xavier Boucherat

In 2016, Schaeffler launched its OmniSteer project, a collaboration between the supplier and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. A budget of €3.4m (US$4m) was set aside for research into the concepts and prototype technologies that could become regular features on tomorrow’s roads.
