OEMs could embrace Apple style business model, says Ford

Connectivity could turn OEMs into far more than car manufacturers, but are they up to the challenge? Business models will need to change and UXs improve. By Xavier Boucherat

Research from Kelley Blue Book suggests that in the short to medium term, ride-sharing and ride-hailing services will not have a major impact on automotive sales. A survey of 1,900 drivers in the US suggests that more than three-quarters of those who regularly use ride-sharing services said they plan on buying their own car within the next two years. Boston Consulting Group similarly predicted little effect on sales, forecasting that car-sharing would reduce vehicle sales worldwide by only 792,000 units in 2021 – just slightly more than 1% of expected sales of 78.4 million units.
