The gravity of the current status of global road safety is underlined by two statistics. The first is the number of people killed worldwide in road traffic incidents every year: 1.25 million. The second is the high proportion of low and middle income countries in which these fatalities occur: 90%, despite these countries accounting for just half of the global vehicle parc.
