The map that is used today for navigation is not sufficient for the future needs of automated driving, and the car will increasingly require much more accurate and up-to-date information about its location and environment.
For these automated developments to occur in an efficient timeframe, automotive OEMs are increasingly relying on partnerships with highly skilled technology suppliers to help them to shape the future of highly automated driving and advance their in-car software as much as is currently possible.
To enable OEMs to improve their quest towards automated driving, TomTom has recently announced partnerships with companies including Volkswagen and Toyota, enabling the OEMs to launch the suppliers’ Highly Automated Driving (HAD) systems, and develop the digital map which is essential for automated driving.
Automotive World met with Frans de Rooij, TomTom's Senior Product Line Manager, at the Paris Motor Show, who noted the importance of OEM collaboration with suppliers such as TomTom in reaching their autonomous goals. “TomTom’s mapping expertise provides the precise data and scalable technology platform needed to enable highly automated driving in cars,” explained de Rooij.
