Regulations will drive a gradual diesel phase-out, but uncertainty remains in US

Emissions legislation will mean reduced diesel trucking long-term, but exactly what a Biden administration will bring to the table is not yet clear. By Xavier Boucherat

To what extent are regulations going to force the trucking sector out from under diesel dominance, and into an era of electrification, hydrogen-powered mobility and greener fuels? To be sure, legislation will drive change in all major markets: in the EU, the heavy-duty sector will be subject to CO2 emission limits for the first time, along with the ongoing requirements of Euro VI and, at some point, Euro VII. Meanwhile, in the US, the incoming Biden administration means changes at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Then there’s China, which has long targeted fossil fuel-powered vehicles in an effort to clean up air pollution problems.
