Discussions on autonomous driving often automatically turn to the passenger vehicle segment, where the current speed of innovation and development is unprecedented. Numerous OEMs have already introduced semi-autonomous features to the market, while some are currently carrying out tests on highly automated driving technology. There has even been some movement from authorities in regards to imposing safety standards for the testing and deployment of highly automated passenger vehicles.
Commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturers and suppliers are also eager to push forward with the development of autonomous trucks, a handful of which, like Daimler and Otto, have shown early concepts. According to Bruno Blin, Executive Vice President, Volvo Group and President, Renault Trucks, the challenges facing the CV segment are very similar to those in the passenger vehicle segment when considering automation.
