Role for lighting in car safety greater than ever

The future looks bright for automotive LEDs, which, as Hella explains, could improve safety inside the vehicle as well as outside. By Xavier Boucherat

In terms of function, automotive lighting has come a long way since the birth of the automotive industry. Rear light systems, for example, were originally used simply as tail-lights and stop-lights. By contrast, modern rear light combos also feature rear indicators, reverse lights, fog lights and reflectors. In addition, lighting setups have become increasingly important for designers looking to imbue character and personality into new models. As Steffan Pietzonka points out, some models are easy to recognise in the dark purely on account of their lighting.
