Running a fleet of heavy-duty trucks can be an expensive operation, and the trailer is a significant investment. According to US removals company Atlas Van Lines, running a single big rig costs around US$185,000 a year, while Frost & Sullivan estimates that the cost of a trailer alone can be between US$30,000 and US$50,000. Research by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) finds that trailers are replaced once every 12 years on average, meaning that once bought, a trailer needs to be maintained for a significant period of time.
