A short-lived party: hurricanes send plateauing US market into temporary growth mode

Demand is hot at the moment as individuals and fleets scramble to replace storm-damaged vehicles, but it doesn't change the economic fundamentals, writes Megan Lampinen

Natural disasters may be bad news on most fronts, but for vehicle sales they can serve as a serious stimulus. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have sent a plateauing US market into growth mode, albeit on a strictly temporary basis. Following several lacklustre months, light vehicle sales in September reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of sales in excess of 18 million units. Kelley Blue Book had been forecasting a 17.5 million SAAR.
