All sides warning industry future at stake as EPA reopens MTE

The OEMs threaten dire consequences if the standards remain in place, while the environmental groups issue similar warning if they are dialled back. By Megan Lampinen

It is official - the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reopened the Mid-Term Evaluation (MTE) for car and light truck fuel economy targets. With just days left in office, the previous administration had closed the MTE much earlier than expected in a bid to secure the current targets. At the time, Administrator Gina McCarthy had said that OEMs were 'well-positioned' to meet the standards for model years 2022-2025 vehicles.
