Smart City Challenge has planners rethinking movement

The seven finalists of the US Department of Transportation's Smart City Challenge made their official pitches for funding, writes Megan Lampinen

Growing urbanisation is exacerbating congestion and pollution in major urban areas, but connected technology promises dramatic improvements. As Aric Dromi, a self-proclaimed futurologist, digital philosopher and professional troublemaker, told Automotive World, fresh alternatives are clearly needed. "How many more cars can you have in the streets of London, Los Angeles, Beijing?" he asks. "You need to rethink how you move people and things from one place to another." This is where the US government is stepping in.
