Software will make shared cars feel familiar

With multiple drivers getting behind the wheel, the user experience is being shaped so that everyone feels at home. By Freddie Holmes

The automotive landscape has evolved to a point where the user experience (UX) now closely mirrors the consumer electronics sector. Users can now log in to any device, anywhere, and load their account settings. Even if it is an entirely new device or location, their ‘connected lifestyle’ goes with them.

The car has always been something of a challenge from this perspective, with brought-in devices connected through different wired and wireless systems. In many cases, personalised connectivity could not be supported at all, with drivers making do with the pre-set solutions embedded in the car. But times are changing, and the vehicle is now part of that connectivity journey. This has created new opportunities to make vehicles feel familiar—even if they have never been used by the driver before.
