Many industry experts have suggested that the European diesel market will suffer in the light of the Volkswagen emissions scandal. As a result, some believe that hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) could witness a surge in popularity, while others think growth in the gasoline and electric vehicle (EV) segments may be secured with the help of legislative influence.
But Europe has been heavily reliant on diesel for decades. A report released by French investment bank Natixis explained that Europe has “witnessed a strong dieselisation movement over the past 20 years as cars were actively marketed for their lower fuel cost and higher fuel efficiency than petrol models.”
