Tomorrow’s steering could be fail-operational, and customisable

Bosch's Marcus Parche outlines the numerous challenges ahead for automotive suppliers as greater autonomy appears on the road. By Xavier Boucherat

In order to accommodate higher levels of automation, the steering systems found in today’s passenger cars will need to move beyond the current ‘fail-safe’ paradigm to a ‘fail-operational’ model. That’s according to Marcus Parche, Executive Vice President for Research, Development and Passenger Car Steering Systems at Robert Bosch Automotive Steering.
