Tough Opel labour talks underscore cost cutting urgency

German unions have managed to secure the future of their local operations over the next few years but have had to make concessions on pay rises. By Megan Lampinen

After months of tough negotiations, angry words, protests and threats, Opel management and German unions have finally reached a new labour agreement. The deal brings fresh investment for R&D and the plants in Eisenach, Ruesselsheim and Kaiserlautern in exchange for a postponement of promised wage increases.
