US tyre fatality stats called into question

The US-based Safety Institute has disputed the way NHTSA counts tyre-related deaths on the road. By Xavier Boucherat

Research released by the Safety Institute, a US-based safety advocacy group, has suggested that tyre-related fatalities on the roads may be higher than those reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). A study by the group suggests a 10.6% increase in deaths between 2013 and 2014, rising from 539 in 2013 to 596 in 2014. The same study indicates fatalities for all other kinds of crashes in the period rising by 0.3%.
