Much has been made about Tesla’s struggles with franchise laws to establish its direct sales model in the United States. Tesla has run up against these laws in a number of states and has won some concessions from legislatures and/or state regulatory agencies to sell direct to consumers. Even so, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) and several state dealer associations have fought to prohibit, or at least limit, the number of physical sites for Tesla to conduct sales. Their overriding concern is that Tesla will pave the way for other manufacturers to eventually bypass the independent franchise dealers.
