Why autonomous trucks need bespoke positioning tech

Positioning technology designed for autonomous cars won't cut it in a large freight vehicle pulling a trailer full of heavy goods, writes Megan Lampinen

Driverless vehicles need to know not only where they are on the road but also where they are in relation to road furniture and other road users. This applies to both passenger cars and heavy commercial vehicles (CVs). While all autonomous vehicle (AV) positioning systems may share certain foundational elements, trucks clearly pose additional challenges with their size and dimensions, not to mention the various trailers they usually haul.
