Will driverless cars mean fewer cars?

As the autonomous car moves ever closer to reality, many predict that it will bring multiple benefits such as reduced crashes and less traffic congestion. Some have suggested that it could even result in less vehicle ownership, based on self-driving vehicles employing a ‘return to home’ mode which could enable vehicle sharing.
