Dearman exhibited it’s groundbreaking liquid nitrogen-powered engine at Alexandra Palace, London for Freight in the City

Last year’s Expo saw 1,000 people from 500 organisations attend. It’s not hard to see why there was such an impressive turnout, given the many ongoing debates that will shape the future of the freight sector- Brexit, air quality, driver shortages, direct vision, alternative fuels, to name but a few.

The focus was particularly on tackling air pollution, given the variety of clean air zones and air quality plans due to come into force. This is where Dearman is playing a major role and we exhibited with Innovate UK, whose continuous support for Dearman has been invaluable.

A significant share of the freight sector’s polluting emissions come from diesel-powered refrigerated deliveries. These are the large supermarket delivery trucks that have, not one, but two diesel engines- one to power the vehicle, and one to power the refrigeration in the rear compartment.

The second diesel engine is much more weakly regulated- in fact it emits six times as much nitrogen oxides and 29 times as much particulate matter as the main engine. The new regulations on non-road mobile machinery, which will apply to new secondary engines going onto the market, will apply from January 2019 but will make little difference to those emission levels.
