The inaugural Global NCAP World Congress was successfully held on 27 – 28 September in Delhi, India. The Congress saw representatives from new car assessment programmes (NCAPs) across the world, as well as international and local road safety experts and stakeholders gathered to discuss how to build a global market for vehicle safety, fleet safety, motorcycle safety, the role of NCAPS in emerging markets, child safety and trends and opportunities towards 2030. Attendees heard from experts on the topics and had the chance to participate in lively discussions on how to advance vehicle safety across the globe. Coinciding with the World Congress was the release of new Safer Cars for India crash test results for the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Renault Lodgy. Maruti Suzuki achieved an encouraging four star result with the Vitara Brezza while Renault failed to impress with the . The Vitara Brezza and the previously tested Tata Nexon are clear examples of progress made by the local Indian manufacturers and the race is now on for the first five star car in India!
Global NCAP took the opportunity at the World Congress to recognize organizations and individuals that have made a significant contribution to vehicle safety. In 2018, we were pleased to present the following awards:
In addition to the World Congress, on 26 September, Global NCAP in conjunction with the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) co-hosted a Stop The Crash event at the Buddh International circuit in Delhi, India. At the event motorcycle ABS, electronic stability control (ESC) and autonomous emergency braking (AEB) city were showcased. The event was well attended by media and Mr. Abhay Damle, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
It was announced earlier in the month by Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport Highways that the government plans to make advanced driver assistance systems mandatory in cars by 2022. Following that, at Stop the Crash, Mr. Damle announced that electronic stability control and autonomous emergency braking will be incorporated in new vehicles between 2022 and 2023, which was a very welcomed development in India.
The events welcomed over 190 delegates. The next Global NCAP World Congress will be held in Germany in 2020.
